There was a recent interview posted on Golden Skate/FSU with Irina. It says she is busier than ever right now. Her son, Artem just turned one and she is
enjoying being a mother. Says she is disappointed there are no medal contenders among the Russian women, but that there is a good program in place now so
things should be better in the future. She is still skating every day because she enjoys it, but does not feel the need to compete anymore and is happy with
the skating medals she has. Says she was in the US to perform in a show "Skate for the Heart", a show that raises awareness of heart disease.. Also
appearing is Ekaterina G. and Rudy Galindo and musican Kenny G. It will be aired on NBC on Feb, 7 as part of National Heart Month. Talks a bit about her
problems with with vasculitis, an inflamation of the blood vessels. I would like to see both of them skate. I have seen Irina skate when I attended Worlds in
Vancouver in 2001, but unfortunately I have never seen Katia skate live.
I don't think I told you that my brother has married a Russian woman. She is a math prof who trained at the University of Moscow. She is from a town about 4-5 hours train ride south of Moscow. However, she isn't interested on skating so I wouldn't ask her what is current in the Russian papers. She is a nice woman and has a 11 year old son from a previous marriage.
